10-things-to-know-featured-img425The top 10 things that your Lash Artist wants you to know.

1. It’s important to clean your lashes.

If you want your natural lashes to be healthy and continue to grow so you can actually wear lash extensions, wash them. We can’t stress this enough! Cleaning your eyelashes daily, especially the base of your lashes, allows them to stay clear of makeup residue and oils. If the hair follicle is clogged, the lashes won’t grow. Still not entirely convinced? Google Microscopic Demodex and that should get you on board with daily cleansing.

2. Sleep correctly.Please.
If you’re at all concerned with the lifespan of your favorite lash extensions, avoid sleeping face down. This puts your lashes in a position to become twisted or tangled and even fall out. Sleeping on your back is ideal, but if you choose to sleep on your side, make sure your lashes are hanging off the side of the pillow. This isn’t to mention that you’ll reap the benefit of a healthy neck from not sleeping face down. You’re welcome.

3. Lash growth is effected by lifestyle: diet, stress, supplements, etc.

It’s important to remember that we’re talking about eyelashes or human hair which is made from keratin. Keratin is a protein that is effected by diet, lifestyle choices, and stress. Hair is an extension of your body and a reflection of your health and stress is a known health hazard that can lead to thinning hair. Hormonal flocculation can be a burden on hair growth as well. Eating a balanced diet and living a healthy lifestyle means a lot to your lashes!

4. Touching and manipulating your lashes causes them to fall out prematurely.
Trust and believe that we understand the will power it takes not to touch or play with your lash extensions every time you catch a glimpse in the mirror. Fight the urge! It really helps. Make it a point to only play with your lashes when you are grooming them.

5. Coming to a lash appointment with mascara on is like going to the dentist without brushing your teeth.

As gross as this sounds, it’s true. If you arrive with mascara on your lashes, it takes extra time to clean them. What’s worse is it takes time away from actually applying new lashes. It’s unnecessary to deal with so come clean, makeup free, and ready to lash.

6. If you want your lashes to remain full, you must maintain them regularly.

Even when all of the above is taken into account, you still need to get a fill or touch-up every 3 to 4 weeks. Natural lashes shed as their growth cycle progresses and eventually fall out regardless of how diligent you are. To always have the “just got a new full set” look, maintenance is the reality but a fantastic one to have.

7. I’m not really a magician. I can’t change the texture, curl, or length of your natural lashes.

If you lust for J. Lo’s lashes but have short, thin ones unable to healthily support the same type of lash extensions, it’s hard to say if her look is a good fit for your lashes. The trick is to have a strong foundation to build on. It may help to take natural supplements or use growth serums. From there, we can abra-ca-lash-ya with the best lash looks suited for you. And behold, yours might even look better!

8. The truth about wearing mascara with lash extensions.

Sure you can wear lash extension safe mascara which means the mascara is free from glycol and urea, 2 ingredients that are great for mascara but not for lash extensions. Be conscious of the fact that even if you wear lash extension safe mascara, regular application can be detrimental. Thoroughly cleaning mascara from your lashes becomes a vigorous task, and remember, lash extensions can fall out due to excessive rubbing. Wearing mascara every now and again is OK but proceed with caution. This good idea can easily be overdone into a bad decision.

9. Strip lashes, cluster lashes, and lash extensions are not the same thing.

Strip lashes, cluster lashes, and eyelash extensions are all very different.

Strip lashes are designed for personal application and for one night wear ability.

Cluster lashes are the exact same concept with a differently dramatic end result. Neither strip lashes nor cluster lashes should ever be applied with eyelash extension adhesive. Period. Eyelash extension glue should never come in contact with the skin which is the contact point for strip and cluster lashes. Get it, got it, good.

Lash extensions are semi-permanent and applied by professionals who use isolation techniques and high quality products. The results last weeks and you don’t have to worry about a lash strip coming loose at an inopportune moment. You wake up looking gorgeous and ready to go.

10. Time is money.

The bottom line is everyone should be respectful of other people’s time. This goes both ways…always. Most lash artists work on commission or are in a room rental situation which means they pay a weekly or monthly rent to their salon/spa owner. When you no-call, no-show or last minute cancel, your lash artist doesn’t make money. That messes with their livelihood and if you do it more than once, it messes with their patience. So be kind to the people that work on your most important feature.
